The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Tuesday prosecuted a suspect, Salifu Olije Mustapha, before the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Kubwa, Abuja, over allegations of impersonation and fraudulent activities linked to the anti-graft agency.
Mustapha appeared before Justice A.I. Akobi on a four-count charge bordering on impersonation and misrepresentation. According to the EFCC, the suspect allegedly posed as a staff of the commission and participated in activities aimed at deceiving members of the public.
One of the charges stated that the defendant, sometime in March 2026, falsely claimed to be a Nigerian Air Force officer and allegedly assisted two other individuals identified as Abubakar, and Haruna Mamuda, who are under investigation by another law enforcement agency.
Prosecutors alleged that the trio dressed in EFCC operational uniforms and used a Toyota Corolla with registration number KTU399GT to target unsuspecting victims around Sheriff Plaza in Wuse II, Abuja.
Another count accused Mustapha of impersonating a public servant by presenting himself as an officer of the Nigerian Air Force and using the false identity to defraud members of the public. The offences are said to contravene provisions of the Penal Code Act.
The defendant pleaded guilty to all four charges after they were read in court. Following the plea, prosecution counsel R.U. Adaga urged the court to convict and sentence him accordingly.
Justice Akobi subsequently adjourned the matter until June 1, 2026, for sentencing. The EFCC disclosed that Mustapha was arrested after intelligence reports linked him to the impersonation of EFCC officials. Investigators alleged that he and two other suspects were seen in fake EFCC uniforms harassing motorists and extorting money from them in Abuja.
