Tension escalated in Oyo State on Monday as protesters took to the streets to demand urgent action over the abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area.
The demonstrators gathered at the entrance of the Oyo State Secretariat in Ibadan, where they occupied the main road and disrupted movement of vehicles in both directions. The protest caused traffic congestion as commuters and motorists were forced to seek alternative routes.
Participants said the action was aimed at expressing their frustration and grief over the recent kidnapping incident, which has sparked widespread concern among residents and parents across the state. Many protesters called on security agencies and government authorities to intensify efforts to secure the safe release of the victims.
Witnesses reported that the protesters remained seated on the road for several hours, carrying placards and chanting slogans demanding improved security measures in schools and rural communities.
The abduction of the pupils and teachers has continued to generate outrage, with residents urging authorities to take decisive steps to address growing insecurity and prevent similar attacks in the future.
As of the time of reporting, government officials had not issued a fresh statement regarding the protest, while efforts to rescue the kidnapped victims were said to be ongoing.
