Former Anambra State Governor and 2027 presidential hopeful, Peter Obi, has pledged to significantly improve Nigeria’s electricity sector by raising the country’s power generation and distribution capacity to at least 10,000 megawatts within four years if elected president.

Obi made the declaration during his acceptance speech at the national convention of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Abuja, where he emerged as the party’s presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.

Speaking on the state of the nation’s power sector, Obi said Nigeria’s current electricity output, estimated at about 4,000 megawatts, falls far short of what is required to meet the needs of a population exceeding 200 million people. He argued that inadequate power supply continues to hinder economic growth, industrial expansion, and overall national development.

The former governor emphasized that fixing the electricity sector would be one of the top priorities of his administration. According to him, stable and reliable power is essential for attracting investment, creating jobs, boosting productivity, and improving the standard of living for Nigerians.

His pledge has since sparked discussions among political analysts and members of the public, with many debating the feasibility of achieving such an ambitious target within a single four-year term. Others have welcomed the proposal as a critical step toward addressing one of Nigeria’s most persistent infrastructure challenges.

As political activities ahead of the 2027 elections gather pace, Obi has continued to place power sector reforms at the center of his campaign message, maintaining that improved electricity generation and distribution are crucial to unlocking Nigeria’s economic potential and driving sustainable growth.
