Senator Nkechi Justina Nwaogu has formally declared her intention to contest for the Abia Central Senatorial District seat in the 2027 general elections. The seasoned politician made the announcement in April 2026 in her hometown of Osisioma Ngwa, stating that her ambition is driven by a desire to revive what she described as ineffective legislative representation in the district.
Nwaogu, who is seeking election under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has already begun laying the groundwork for her campaign. Her political movement, branded “Equity 2027,” focuses on leveraging her years of legislative experience. She has also reportedly obtained the party’s nomination and expression of interest forms, positioning herself ahead of the party primaries.
She previously represented Abia Central under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) before defecting to the APC in 2016. During her time in the National Assembly, she chaired key committees, including Banking, Insurance and Other Financial Institutions, as well as Aviation. Prior to her Senate tenure, she also served in the House of Representatives between 2003 and 2007.
Highlighting her legislative priorities, Nwaogu said she intends to push for the passage of the Gender Equality Bill while promoting women’s empowerment and infrastructure development across the district. She has argued that effective lawmaking requires experience, describing the role as one best suited for seasoned legislators.
Beyond politics, Nwaogu has a background in banking and administration, having worked as a pioneer branch manager at Diamond Bank and later as chief executive of Libra Investment Ltd. She holds a PhD in Political Science and has undertaken studies at institutions in the United Kingdom, including the London College of Printing and the Polytechnic of South Bank London.
Widely known in Abia State politics as “Mama APC,” she has remained active at the grassroots level and is recognized for her advocacy for women’s participation in leadership. She is also a recipient of the national honour of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON).
