Abia State Governor Alex Otti is preparing to officially flag off the construction of a new stadium in Umuahia, a major project expected to boost sports development and strengthen infrastructure in the state.
The proposed stadium is designed to become a key sporting facility in the South-East, providing a modern venue for competitions, talent discovery, and community events. The project is part of the Otti administration’s broader efforts to improve public infrastructure and create more opportunities for young people through sports.
The planned development has attracted positive reactions from various quarters, including Super Eagles winger Samuel Chukwueze. The Nigerian international footballer is among those who have reportedly commended the governor’s performance and ongoing development initiatives across Abia State.
State officials say preparations for the project have reached an advanced stage. Governor Otti had earlier disclosed that land for the stadium had already been secured, while relevant assessments and planning procedures were being completed to ensure a smooth commencement of construction. When completed, the Umuahia stadium is expected to serve as a hub for sporting activities, youth development programmes, and major events. Stakeholders believe the facility could help attract regional tournaments and create economic opportunities for local businesses and residents.
The stadium project also aligns with other infrastructure and urban renewal programmes being implemented by the state government. Supporters of the initiative argue that investments in sports facilities can contribute to youth empowerment, job creation, and community development.
With the official flag-off drawing closer, many residents are optimistic that the project will enhance Abia’s sporting profile and further support the state’s long-term development goals.
