The wife of the Governor of Abia State has officially commissioned and handed over 35 newly constructed “Dignity Homes” to widows across the state’s 17 local government areas as part of activities commemorating Governor Alex Otti’s third anniversary in office.
The commissioning ceremony was held on Tuesday at Umuhute, Ahiake Ndume in Umuahia, which served as the central location for the housing initiative coordinated through the Office of the First Lady.
Speaking during the event, the First Lady said the project was created to provide shelter, dignity, and renewed hope for widows who had been facing severe economic hardship and poor living conditions. She described the programme as a reflection of the administration’s commitment to people-focused governance and social welfare.
She commended Governor Alex Otti for his continued support toward programmes aimed at improving the lives of vulnerable residents in Abia State. The First Lady also appreciated the efforts of the Special Adviser to the Governor on Policies and Interventions, Dr. Christian Uche Anokwuru, the Ministry of Women Affairs led by Dr. Maureen Aghukwa, local contractors, and other contributors who played key roles in delivering the project.
According to her, the beneficiaries were not only provided with new homes but also received food items and financial support to help them settle immediately. She added that plans were underway to introduce sustainable empowerment and livelihood initiatives for the widows.
“For a widow, a home represents stability, dignity, and restored hope,” she stated while reaffirming the administration’s commitment to expanding social intervention programmes for vulnerable groups across the state.
