Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has emerged as the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the 2027 general election after winning the party’s national primary election.

The party announced that Atiku secured a total of 1,846,370 votes in the primary contest. He defeated former Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi, who polled 504,117 votes, while businessman Mohammed Hayatu-Deen secured 177,120 votes.

The results were officially announced on Wednesday after the conclusion of the ADC’s direct primary election conducted nationwide. Party officials says that the exercise is a significant step in preparations for the 2027 presidential election.

In his acceptance speech, Atiku thanked the party leadership and members for what he called a transparent and credible electoral process. He also encouraged opposition parties and supporters to work together ahead of the next general election.

ADC National Chairman David Mark stated that the primary election demonstrated the party’s commitment to internal democracy despite some challenges experienced.

Meanwhile, both Amaechi and Hayatu-Deen reportedly raised concerns over alleged irregularities in parts of the primary election process, calling for a review of certain aspects of the election.
