Peter Obi has officially resigned from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), announcing his departure on Sunday, May 3, 2026. The former presidential candidate disclosed the decision through his verified X (formerly Twitter) account, pointing to what he described as a deeply troubled internal crises within the party.

In his statement, Obi attributed his exit to a “toxic” political climate plagued by ongoing crises, legal disputes, and internal divisions. He expressed concern that the party had become  unstable, making it hard to pursue meaningful political engagements and ambitions.

Obi further alleged that individuals he described as “agents of the Nigerian state” had infiltrated the ADC, replicating challenges he previously encountered within the Labour Party (LP). According to him, these influences have contributed to a culture centered on control and exclusion, rather than inclusive governance and national development.

Despite his criticisms, Obi emphasized that his decision was not driven by personal grievances against the party’s leadership. He specifically acknowledged and maintained respect for the ADC National Chairman, Senator David Mark, as well as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and other stakeholders of the party.

The development marks a significant shift in Nigeria’s political landscape, raising fresh questions about Obi’s next move ahead of future elections. His departure is expected to trigger reactions across party lines and among his supporters nationwide arguing on the next party he’s likely to join.
