The Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara has announced his withdrawal from the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primaries ahead of the election in Rivers State.
In a statement released on May 20, 2026, the governor said the decision came after wide consultations with his family, political allies, and close associates. According to him, the move was made in the interest of maintaining peace, unity, and political stability in rivers state.
He noted that leadership often demands personal sacrifice, stressing that the overall interest of Rivers State must take priority over individual political ambitions. He added that he remains committed to the progress and development of the state despite stepping away from the primary contest.
The governor also pledged his full support for whichever candidate eventually emerges as the APC flagbearer for the 2026 governorship election. He called on his supporters to remain calm and continue working for the unity of the party.
Fubara expressed gratitude to his loyal supporters for their dedication and sacrifices throughout the political process. He also appreciated Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his encouragement and continued support.
He maintained that his withdrawal should not be seen as an act of fear or weakness but rather a decision driven by conviction and a desire to preserve peace and stability in Rivers State.
