A family in Ebonyi State has been thrown into confusion and grief after the corpse of their 94-year-old grandmother reportedly disappeared from a mortuary just days before her scheduled burial.
According to reports, the deceased woman’s body had been deposited in a mortuary following her death, with family members making arrangements for her final burial rites. However, when relatives arrived to retrieve the corpse ahead of the ceremony, they were allegedly informed that the body could not be found.
The incident reportedly sparked panic among family members and community residents, with questions raised about how a corpse could vanish from a facility entrusted with preserving the remains of deceased persons.
Sources familiar with the matter claimed that a mortuary attendant linked to the incident could not be located after the disappearance was discovered, fueling further suspicion and concern among the bereaved family.
The situation reportedly became more controversial after the family was allegedly presented with another corpse, which they immediately rejected, insisting that the body did not belong to their late grandmother.
Relatives maintained that they were familiar with the deceased’s physical features and could not accept what they described as a “substitute body.” They called on relevant authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding the disappearance and determine the whereabouts of their loved one’s remains.
The development has generated reactions online, with many Nigerians expressing shock and disbelief over the incident. Others have called for stricter oversight of mortuaries and funeral facilities to prevent similar occurrences.
As of the time of filing this report, authorities had not released an official statement detailing how the corpse allegedly disappeared or whether any arrests had been made in connection with the matter.
Investigations into the incident are reportedly ongoing.
