The Abia State Government has officially commissioned the landmark Nnenna Oti Bus Terminal in Umuahia, marking a major step in the state’s drive toward a modern sustainable transportation network in the state.

Governor Alex Otti announced that the multimodal transport hub is good to go for public use, stating that the facility was designed to accommodate more than 340 buses at once and is connected to the state’s expanding network of electric buses to ease transportation in the state.

According to the governor, the terminal is powered by sustainable infrastructure and supported with independent power and water systems to ensure uninterrupted operations.

The facility was named after Prof. Nnenna Nnennaya-Oti, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Returning Officer during the 2023 Abia governorship election, in recognition of what the governor described as her courage, integrity, and patriotism.

Governor Otti stated that the honour goes beyond celebrating one individual, noting that it also serves as a tribute to electoral officials, security operatives, party agents, and citizens who defended democracy and resisted intimidation during the election period.

He disclosed that 20 electric buses are already in operation across the state, with additional buses expected in the coming weeks as part of the government’s broader transportation reform agenda.

Speaking during the commissioning ceremony in an address titled “Raising the Bar,” the governor said his administration has moved beyond what he described as the “era of small ambitions,” insisting that Abia State will continue to pursue bold developmental projects capable of transforming the lives of residents.

He also commended Planet Projects Limited for delivering the terminal project, while appreciating the efforts of the Commissioner for Transport, Dr. Chimezie Ukaegbu, the Senior Special Assistant on Transport, Dr. Obioma Nwaogbe, and their team for their contributions toward the successful completion of the facility.

Governor Otti urged residents and members of the host community to take ownership of the terminal by maintaining cleanliness and protecting the infrastructure from vandalism.

He further appealed to Abians to pay their taxes regularly, stressing that sustainable development depends on collective responsibility and consistent revenue generation.
