Nigerian comedian De General has said protests may no longer be an effective solution to Nigeria’s growing insecurity, urging citizens instead to focus on participating in elections through the use of their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).

Speaking during a livestream session with a popular TikToker, De General argued that previous protests in the country failed to produce meaningful change despite the sacrifices made by citizens.

According to the comedian, the last major protest in Nigeria resulted in the loss of lives, yet authorities maintained that nothing significant happened afterward. He said the experience weakened his belief in street demonstrations as a tool for achieving national reform.

“Staging a protest won’t solve anything. There is no effect in staging a protest. The last time we protested, lives were lost but they said nothing happened,” he said during the livestream.

De General maintained that the most effective way Nigerians can influence the future of the country is by participating actively in free and fair elections. He encouraged citizens to obtain their PVCs and vote for leaders they genuinely want in office.

His comments have generated discussions online, with many Nigerians sharing mixed reactions over the role of protests and electoral participation in addressing insecurity and governance issues in the country.
