Residents of Creektown in Odukpani Local Government Area of Cross River State have been left in fear and shock following the arrest of a man suspected to be behind a series of killings in the community.

The suspect, identified as Akaninyene, was reportedly apprehended after security operatives received intelligence linking him to the disappearance and murder of several residents in the area. The operation was carried out by a joint team of Nigerian Army personnel and tactical security operatives.

According to reports, the suspect was tracked to a secluded hut hidden inside a forest in Abanyama, Ukim Ita Community. Sources said he allegedly attempted to escape during the raid after trying to retrieve a weapon but was quickly subdued and arrested by security personnel.

During a search of the hideout, operatives reportedly discovered eight shallow graves containing decomposing bodies buried without heads. Investigators also found plantain crops planted over the graves, allegedly in an attempt to conceal the burial sites.

Security sources further claimed that the suspect confessed during interrogation to killing about 30 people within the community. He also allegedly disclosed that a female accomplice helped lure victims before they were murdered.

The latest suspected killing, believed to have occurred on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, reportedly raised alarm after residents heard cries and sounds of struggle from the victim. Community youths and leaders subsequently alerted security authorities, leading to the operation that resulted in the arrest.

Meanwhile, the spokesperson of the Nigeria Police Force in Cross River State, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, said the incident is still undergoing verification by the police. The development has continued to generate concern among residents, many of whom are demanding a thorough investigation and justice for the victims.
